Document Cameras

"The Ladibug"

In Fall, 2015, Ladibug document cameras are being provided for use with classroom projectors.  The Lumens Ladibug DC-192 provides a high-quality HD image with connections through HDMI, VGA, or USB.  It can record .jpg images or video with sound.  It can be configured for Time-lapse photography. Microscope adapters available upon request.

Connecting to your Projector:

There are three options for connecting your LadiBug to your Epson projector via HDMI. (The camera needs to be connected to power in all cases, so plug it into power first.)

Connect your room HDMI cable to the "HDMI Out" port on the Ladibug.   This is the simplest setup.  The Ladibug can be left connected for everyday use.

Use the second HDMI cable to connect your laptop to the "HDMI In" port on the Ladibug.  The image from the laptop will “pass-through” the Ladibug to the projector. Use the Source button to toggle between the two sources.

Connect the Ladibug to your laptop via USB cable. Open the "LadiBug" software (in your Applications folder) to bring the image onto your laptop screen, which can then be projected.  This is a good option if you keep your laptop connected to the projector “all day” while you are teaching.

VGA connections are available for older projectors.

The Controls / The Remote:

Ladibugs can be controlled from the "console" on the camera, but they also have a remote control that's very useful.

We suggest you locate these buttons first:

  • Lamp (toggles through several settings of the two lamps)
  • Freeze (keeps one image on the screen while you adjust under the camera)
  • Focus (on the camera head; to quickly refocus)
  • Zoom +/- (you can get in really close!)
  • Brightness +/- (can sometimes improve the image)

Later, you might wish to explore:

  • Annotation – plug in a USB mouse and drag to the right to activate annotation tools.
  • Pan – zooms into the middle of the image and allows you to move around.
  • Mask – mask an area of the image
  • Spotlight – highlight an area of the image
  • Rotate – to flip/turn the image (e.g. to show the room)
  • Preset Image Modes & Photo/Text mode adjustments
  • Manual Focus – when auto focus can’t get it right
  • Picture in Picture (PIP)  - compares live / stored image
  • Time Lapse Captures – takes a series of photos over time
  • Connect to Microscope  - adapters available.

The "Ladibug" Software

When the Ladibug is connected to your laptop via USB, the image from the camera will appear inside the "Ladibug" software.  Software is already on all teacher laptops and can be added to other AAPS computers upon request.

Why might you want to use this option?
  • It’s easy to switch between Ladibug image to other software you are displaying on the projector.
  • You can record longer video files straight to your hard drive.
  • You have access to more annotation tools.
Features
  • Preview live images from the document camera
  • Annotate with different tools: Text, arrow, and freehand drawing
  • Capture images to an internal gallery
  • Time lapse works by capturing an image at a preconfigured interval
  • Record live presentations directly to hard drive
  • Play back and manage photos

Recording Directly to the Ladibug:

• To take a snapshot (.jpg) of what the Ladibug camera is displaying:
From the Ladibug console, press Capture or from the Remote, press Capture. If no external USB drive is available, the .jpg will be stored on internal memory.

• To record a movie (.avi) with sound directly from the camera, you must first insert a USB drive in the USB port on the camera.
On the Remote control: press Record.  On the console: press and hold the Capture button for 2 sec.

• To playback your photos or movies, press Playback.

• To return to live camera, press Menu.

Microphone level can be adjusted in the Menu / Settings / Control...

*Tip: To play .avi files on your teacher laptop, right-click and select Open with....VLC

Recording with the "Ladibug" software:

If you are going to do a lot of recording, we recommend recording connecting the camera to your laptop via UBS and record directly to your harddrive.

 - More space for longer files.
 - The files are in .mov format.
 - Ready to upload to MediaCast, Google or edit in iMovie

Connect your Ladibug to your laptop via USB cable.  Open the "Ladibug" software.
Click on the "movie camera" icon to start recording.
Files are automatically saved to ~/Documents/Ladibug/
