Display menu

Display Menu

Do you miss the handy Displays icon that was on the menu bar of your old computer, allowing you to change resolutions, turn on mirroring, and detect displays?

If you would like to have those settings easily available all the time:
  1. Click on the Apple menu in the upper left corner of screen and choose App Store
  2. Enter "Display Menu" in the search box in the upper righthand corner of the window. Display Menu is a free app, and you can download it by clicking on “free”, then “install app.” You will be asked for your Apple D (same username and password you would use to purchase something from the iTunes store.
  3. After the app downloads, open it by going to your Applications folder and double-clicking on it. This icon will appear in your menu bar:

  4. Click on the icon to access settings. Make sure that you click the arrow at the bottom of the menu to access the “Start on Log-in” option, which ensures that Display Menu is always accessible.

Hide email addresses when sending to a list (example: to a list of parents)

Using Google Mail follow the steps below to send an email to "undisclosed recipients." The email arrives in all recipient's in-boxes while the list of email addresses remains hidden.

  1. Click on "Compose" to start a message
  2. In the “To” field type the following: "Undisclosed recipients"<your Google Mail address followed by a closing>. The quotation marks and angle brackets are necessary.
  3. For example, if I were emailing to undisclosed recipients it would look like this:
  4. "Undisclosed recipients"<slade@aaps.k12.mi.us> 4. Next, click "Bcc"
  5. In the Bcc field type the email addresses of all of the intended recipients. You may also insert groups from your contact list.
  6. Type the subject of the email in the subject field.
  7. Type your message in the message field.
  8. Click the Send button.

The message will go to all recipients AND will be delivered to your inbox. Only you will be able to see to whom you sent the email (this information will be hidden from the Bcc recipients).

"Caffeine" to keep your laptop awake during presentations

Our laptops are set to go to sleep when there is no active input....a great way to keep the battery from draining.   But when you connected to the projector during a lesson or meeting, you don't want this to happen.

"Caffeine" is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Just click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back to the regular settings.

Get the software:
 - Use any browser to go the product webpage:
                            http://lightheadsw.com/caffeine/
 - Click on the link for "Direct Download"
 - Close the browser, and from a Finder window, open your Downloads folder.
 - Double-click on the file called "Caffeine1.1.1.zip"
(This unzips the file and puts a copy of the application right next to the download.)
 - Drag the "Caffeine" file into your Applications Folder.

Set-up the software:
 - Double-click on Caffeine application to open it.
 - In the preferences window, click the box next to "Automatically start Caffeine at login"
 - We suggest you set the Default Duration to 2 hours.

 - Click "Close"

Use the software:
Anytime you need to keep the computer awake, simply click the coffee-cup icon on the menu bar.  If it's full of coffee, the laptop will not sleep.  Click it again to go back to your normal settings.
